Being a CEO is hard but climbing Everest and being left for dead twice is harder.
This pathologist was left for dead twice on Everest and is the object of one of the greatest survival stories.
Going up, he was blinded by the over-exposure of UVs and low-oxygen.
A blizzard then hit the mountain during the night, causing the Everest Disaster and taking around 10 lives. He bivouacked the night in his tent and miraculously survived with his face and hands exposed. Peers left him there as they thought he'd be too weak to survive.
He survived the night and got down to the camp: his face was black, his hands looked like "the hands of a dead man" and parts of him looked like porcelain, peers said. They put him in a tent to die peacefully. Against all odds, he survived the night with no food or water, crying out for help.
The next day they examined him and started treating his injuries: chopped hands and arms, reconstructed his nose, etc. He is 77 today.
Happy Gritty Monday.
